Description
The sensible tee shot is a fairway wood or long iron played to the left side of the fairway to land short of the water hazard traversing the fairway. Alternatively, if you are feeling adventurous and the wind is from behind, a driver can carry the water to give a short iron to the green. A word of warning; avoid the Jameson graveyard to the right of the fairway at all costs! Testimonials
“I was delighted and surprised to find a new course designed and built in the traditional links style, you would be hard pressed to find a more invigorating vision and challenge. It’s that good.” Sean Connery Description
Five fairway bunkers demand accuracy rather than distance at this hole. The approach requires a high floating shot to hold the elevated green. Testimonials

“Absolutely excellent, fantastic links and wonderful place to stay” JM - USA Description

“Very enjoyable. Lovely course and very friendly and understanding staff” Brian Cooney – Kildare Description
Dating from circa 1850, this is the first of the original Jameson Links holes that Bernhard Langer has incorporated into his design. This 90 degree dogleg tempts you to carry the no mans land to the left directly to the green but this option rarely pays off. Placing a long iron to the corner leaves a short iron approach with all shots breaking left to right around the green. Testimonials
“After playing much of the rubbish that passes for modern architecture its wonderful to play something that proves there are some around who know what classic golf is about. Never change it.” Mike Clayton Description
Another of the Jameson Links holes, the 9th is the only hole on the course without bunkers. The challenge is to hit and hold the elevated green or you will struggle to make Par. Testimonials
“Portmarnock Hotel & Golf Links manages an uncanny blend of the traditional perspective with all that’s best in modern architectural design. Don’t miss this rare and invigorating experience” John Redmond, author Great Golf courses of Ireland. Description
Do not miss the fairway to the left or no fewer than seven bunkers await your drive. If you can avoid the eight other bunkers further along the fairway and surrounding the green this hole is reasonably straight forward! Testimonials
Greatly enjoyed playing this course, had a wonderful time and look forward to coming back soon” Lee Elder Description
Index one. A long drive left of centre of the fairway is crucial if you harbour ambitions of holding this fiercely defended green in regulation. And then two puts is always an achievement on this green. Testimonials
“I always love coming here, wonderful warm reception and the links is always in great condition” PB – Washington DC Description
The ideal tee shot is towards the left hand bunker, but there is a generous landing area to the right of the fairway. The approach shot to this well protected green will be a test of your mettle. Testimonials
“The course was very enjoyable to play. We used the blues, the greens were true and combined with the firm approaches made for a great test. This course should be higher rated. Thanks.” JK - USA Description
This very testing Par 3 with a green surrounded by bunkers makes club selection vital. Testimonials
“New elevated tees give fabulous views. My highlights were the shorter doglegs such as the 8th and 15th, and the imposing sights that greet you on the 16th and 18th" MO Australia Description
Although the shortest Par 4 on the course, this hole is nonetheless very tricky with the positioning of your drive essential if a birdie is to be bagged. The gorse to the left of the green is a good line and you will then have the option of a high approach or a traditional ‘bump and run’. Testimonials
“Fantastic course. Very friendly staff. Enjoyed it. 10 out of 10” RP – South Africa Description
The commencement of what many believe to be among the finest closing holes in links golf begins with the third and final of the original Jameson layout. This dogleg right requires a drive to the left to avoid the cross bunkers. Do not be deceived by the dead ground short of the green, it really is that far! Testimonials
“An outstanding place” JH - USA Description
A drive from this elevated tee to the middle of the fairway will leave you requiring a committed shot to a green sloping left to right guarded by bunkers. If you are driving well and feeling confident you may wish to take on the right side fairway bunkers and gain a few extra metres for your approach. Testimonials
“It is a great honour to represent Portmarnock Hotel & Golf Links, which in my opinion is one of the best courses in Europe. Bernhard Langer’s design provides a challenge for golfers of all abilities, but low handicap players will need precision driving, a sharp short game, and good course management to achieve a good score”em Darren Clarke, Touring Professional, Portmarnock Hotel & Golf Links 1998-2000 Description

Regarded as the signature hole, the tee is set in the dunes and needs steady nerves for a tight shot to hit the fairway and avoid dunes right. Aim for left centre from where a mid-iron will be needed to a green surrounded by dunes and bunkers left, right and behind. Testimonials
“There are very few locations in Europe which could have allowed me the opportunity and landscape to design such a classic championship links I hope all those who play it discover its magic and challenging beauty”. Bernhard Langer |
