Fintan Brennan

Course Superintendent for Portmarnock Hotel & Golf Links

Fintan has worked in the golf industry since 1993 and currently holds the position of Links
Superintendent at Portmarnock Hotel & Golf Links. During his time as Links Superintendent,
Fintan has led the dramatic improvement of species composition in the greens, with Fescue
domination levels over 80% of putting surfaces.
As a 4-handicap golfer, Fintan has a passion for links courses. This passion is demonstrated by
the level of tournament experience which he has gained over the past decade. The highlight of
these experiences was to be at Portmarnock Hotel & Golf Links, where Fintan managed the
Ladies Irish Open in 2008 & 2009. The full list of Fintan’s tournament experience is as follows;
• Alfred Dunhill Links Championship (2003-2013)
• Irish Open at Portmarnock Golf Club (2003)
• Walker Cup Match at Royal County Down (2007)
• Ladies Irish Open at Portmarnock Hotel and Golf Links (2008 & 2009)
• The Open Championship at St. Andrews Links (2010)
• Irish Open at The K Club (2016)
In recent years, Fintan has devised and designed an R&A approved device to assess the
reliability of putting surfaces and to measure green speed (www.greenstester.com). The
Greenstester device is already gaining worldwide recognition following successful trials and
commendations from industry leaders such as A. J. Turgeon, Ph.D. Professor Emeritus of
Turfgrass Management and Micah Woods Ph.D. Chief Scientist at the Asian Turf Centre. The
device is further supported by the R&A’s, recently established, protocol for conducting the
'Holing Out Test'.
