Portmarnock Resort & Jameson Golf Links Achieves Green Key Sustainability Certification
Celebrating an important milestone in our ongoing commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.
We are delighted to announce that Portmarnock Resort & Jameson Golf Links has officially achieved Green Key certification, marking a significant milestone in our commitment to sustainability and responsible hospitality.
Following an extensive 18-month auditing process, this internationally recognised certification reflects the dedication of our entire team to implementing meaningful environmental improvements across the resort, while continuing to deliver the exceptional experiences our guests know and love.
What is Green Key Certification?
Green Key is a globally recognised sustainability certification programme for the tourism and hospitality industry, with certified establishments in more than 90 countries worldwide.
Achieving this certification demonstrates our commitment to meeting established environmental and social sustainability criteria, from responsible resource management and waste reduction to promoting environmental awareness, equality, diversity and inclusion.
For us, achieving Green Key certification is not simply about meeting a set of standards. It represents an important step in our ongoing journey towards operating more responsibly and protecting the beautiful coastal surroundings that make Portmarnock so special.
Making Meaningful Changes Across Our Resort
Over the past 18 months, we have worked together to introduce a range of sustainable practices across all areas of our resort, including our 134 guest bedrooms, restaurants, kitchens, conference facilities, spa, grounds and Jameson Golf Links.
As part of this commitment, we established a dedicated sustainability task force, bringing together team members from across the resort to identify opportunities, develop initiatives and encourage environmentally responsible practices.
Within our guest bedrooms, we have removed single-use plastics, introduced improved recycling facilities and encouraged guests to consider their linen and towel requirements during their stay. We have also upgraded our heating systems to allow for more efficient central management.
Across our restaurants and kitchens, new procedures have helped us significantly reduce food waste, supported by improved waste collection systems. We have also introduced filtered water stations, encouraging guests to refill reusable bottles and helping to reduce unnecessary waste.
Protecting Our Natural Surroundings
Situated alongside the beautiful Velvet Strand, we recognise the importance of protecting the natural environment that surrounds us.
Across our grounds, we have introduced rainwater collection initiatives using repurposed Jameson barrels, a thoughtful connection to the rich heritage of our property. At Jameson Golf Links, we have also replaced petrol-powered machinery with electric and hybrid alternatives as part of our efforts to reduce our environmental impact.
Biodiversity is another important focus of our sustainability journey. Through our partnership with the Dublin Beekeeping Association, we have introduced six beehives across our grounds, with our Golf Course Superintendent taking on the role of beekeeper. This initiative supports local biodiversity while providing opportunities to raise awareness of the vital role bees play in our environment.
Our commitment also extends beyond the resort through our partnership with Portmarnock Community Association. Together, we support local environmental initiatives, including the protection of our coastal dunes and efforts to keep nearby beaches clean and welcoming for everyone.
A Shared Commitment to a More Sustainable Future
Achieving Green Key certification has been a collective effort, made possible by the enthusiasm, dedication and hard work of our entire team.
Our General Manager, William Kirby, expressed his pride in reaching this important milestone, recognising the shared commitment of our colleagues to improving how we operate, reducing our environmental impact and encouraging greater sustainability awareness among both our team and our guests.
While we are incredibly proud of this achievement, we recognise that sustainability is an ongoing journey. We remain committed to identifying new opportunities, improving our practices and making thoughtful decisions that support a more sustainable future.
As we look ahead, we will continue to build on the progress we have made, ensuring that environmental responsibility remains an important part of the Portmarnock Resort & Jameson Golf Links experience.
We look forward to welcoming our guests to Portmarnock Resort, where our commitment to exceptional hospitality goes hand in hand with our responsibility to care for the environment around us.
